Siena has to be my favourite city. The Piazza del Campo, is the site of the Palazzo Pubblico, the Gothic town hall, and Torre del Mangia, a slender 14th-century tower with sweeping views from its distinctive white crown. When built, at 102m high it was one of the tallest secular towers in medieval Italy. Siena has been declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site. During the summer the city showcases the Palio di Siena known locally simply as Il Palio; it is a horse race that is held twice each year. Ten horses and riders, bareback and dressed in the appropriate colours, represent ten wards.
